Mental struggle

Over these last 2 years, life for me has been more of a struggle than ever before. With the uncertainty with Covid, the endless number of restrictions that have been imposed throughout this pandemic, it's been a continuous battle to try and keep myself somewhat sane. For the record, I've struggled with mental health issues all my life. I've had chronic depression since... forever, and I honestly can't remember a time where I haven't been suffering with depression. But these past couple of years have been tough. Before this pandemic, I was working out and losing weight and trying to make a change. I've been overweight since puberty, and I've always struggled with weight loss since. The first lockdown hit, and my mental health got worse again, and I've been feeling the effects since. Food is my comfort and I eat when I am sad to make me feel happy. The problem with this is that I am eating too much and because I was locked inside for months, all the weight I lost, I put it all back on and I'm now probably the heaviest I've ever been in my life.

As my mental health has declined, I've generally become less productive overall and lost a lot of motivation to do anything. I sometimes wake up in the morning and I just can't be bothered to get out of bed. When it comes to friendships, most are either strained or people have stopped talking to me altogether - simply because "I don't seem that interested" in having a conversation or wanted to play video games or hangout with them. I am like this not because I don't like them or anything, it's just exhausting for me to sometimes hold a conversation with other people or keep with certain commitments that come with friendships. I don't blame anyone in my life for wanting to distance themselves away from me. In fact, I am used to it. I've never been that guy that's had many friends.

I often look back and wonder what would happen if I did certain things differently. Would I be where I am now? Would my life be any worse or better? Unfortunately, I'll never know the answer to those questions.

All I can do now is try to improve my wellbeing and try to get back on track with my life, and I've still got a lot of work to do mentally and physically.

Got my booster vaccination

Last week on Thursday the 16th Dec, I received my booster COVID-19 vaccination due to the new Omicron variant. The vaccine I got for my booster was Moderna. This was different to the two initial vaccines I got, as I had the Pfizer vaccine for those. With the Pfizer vaccines, I didn't really get any side effects, apart from the sore arm and a slight headache.

With my Moderna booster, the side effects hit me like a freight train! I got the chills, my body was aching all over and I felt very tired. Along with those side effects, I had the usual arm ache from having the vaccine. These side effects lasted for around 2 days and taking paracetamol did help in making me feel better for a few hours. Despite these side effects, I am glad I got my booster shot as I am somewhat better protected from COVID-19. I'll continue with mask wearing in public spaces though, as the vaccine doesn't make me invulnerable from catching the virus.

Hitting the theme reset button on my blog

For the longest time, I've had a custom CSS theme for my blog. I really liked that my blog had its own distinct identity, but it sure was a pain in the ass to maintain and update. I am now hitting the reset button and going back to basics! The default Listed theme is good enough for me.

Rest in Peace, dark-red theme. You'll be missed.

A list of applications I use, heading into 2022

These are applications that I use on a day-to-day basis and will continue to do so heading into 2022. I will update this blog post if I ever stop using an application that is listed, or I find a new application that I love to use.

Security and privacy:

1Password

I have been using 1Password for a nearly a year now and I find 1Password to be an excellent password manager for my needs. 1Password is costly compared to other password managers on the market, but the overall design and the functionality of auto filling passwords is far better than other password managers I've used in the past.

SimpleLogin

SimpleLogin has become one of my go-to tools when creating new logins on websites or services. Instead of using my real email address, I generate an email alias from either the website, app or browser extension. SimpleLogin gives me peace of mind knowing websites don't know my real email address and if they were to ever be breached, my real email remains safe. SimpleLogin is very underrated and in my opinion, a must use tool.

TokenVault by Standard Notes

It's no secret that I am heavily invested in Standard Notes' ecosystem. I run a blog from it, I create notes within the application pretty much daily and I try to stay active within the community, whether that's messaging in their Slack group or on Twitter. So why should I keep my 2FA tokens elsewhere? It's just super convenient for me to store them there and saves me a few steps in opening a dedicated authenticator app. Furthermore, my tokens are super safe in Standard Notes' Token Vault because they are protected by strong encryption.

VPN:

Mullvad VPN

In my opinion, Mullvad VPN is one of the most trusted VPNs on the market. No logging of data, open-source and no questionable history. They've been audited and have transparent pricing. You won't find the usual BS "limited time sales" like most other VPNs, and they don't pay people to say nice things about them.

Notetaking:

Standard Notes

Standard Notes has become a trusted place I can write down all of my thoughts and feelings safely. When I first downloaded Standard Notes, I never thought I would use it as much as I do today. From noting down reminders, ideas, and running my blog from within Standard Notes, I have achieved more productivity within my work and personal life. I can see myself still using Standard Notes in 50 years time. It's become an integral part of my life.

Cloud storage:

Filen

Filen is a new open-source cloud storage provider based in Germany and I've recently made the switch to it. Filen has Zero-knowledge encryption by default, it's open-source and offers generous storage plans for a reasonable price.

Cryptomator

I use Cryptomator to store sensitive documents like bank statements and bills in cloud storage providers like Google Drive. Crpytomator is open-source and essentially adds zero-knowledge encryption to services that don't have it.

Music:

Spotify

Out of any product on this list, I definitely use Spotify more than the rest. I've been using this music service for years as I just love listening to music. I've tried other music services like Deezer and Tidal but they didn't quite meet my expectations like Spotify does. I honestly think Spotify knows more about my music tastes than I know myself. (Take that as a good thing or a bad thing)

Misc:

Discord

I've been using Discord ever since it released back in 2015. It is my main communication platform to talk and hang out with friends.

Forecastie

Forecastie is an open-source weather app that uses data from OpenWeatherMap.

Imagepipe

Imagepipe is an app that removes exif data from images. I also use it to reduce image size of pictures if I need to send them over email or another service that may limit image size.

NewPipe

NewPipe is an open-source YouTube alternative for Android. I like NewPipe because it doesn't use any of Google's framework libraries or the YouTube API itself. It also makes YouTube Premium irrelevant because NewPipe has all of the features from YouTube Premium that's locked behind a paywall, for free. I can listen to videos in background mode and download those videos through the app and not have to pay £11.99 per month to do so.

Wikipedia

This is probably a something people who personally know me would not of expected to be on this list. I cannot deny the fact that I love Wikipedia. In fact, I've been donating to Wikipedia for the past 4 years because I believe in the vision that knowledge should be free for all, and Wikipedia stands for that. You'll always find the Wikipedia app on my phone as I am always wanting to find more information and gain more knowledge about anything that sparks my interest. I know that people say that Wikipedia can be unreliable, but I believe that opinion is no longer relevant for most topics. Information on the website has gotten more accurate in recent years and therefore I have more trust in Wikipedia.

Vgy(dot)me

Vgy(dot)me is a free image hosting website. It's super simple to use and it even supports ShareX. They unfortunately no longer support video uploading, but they are still one of the best out there.

What are some of your go-to applications and have you got any recommendations for me to try out? Let me know by writing in my guestbook.

Skill-Based Matchmaking SUCKS

So Call of Duty: Vanguard released for Xbox and PC about a month ago and I've been playing it since it launched. Just so it's easier to type, I'm going to abbreviate skill-based matchmaking to SBMM. Now that's been said, I can finally rant about my experience.

"SBMM ruins the game. It's ruining the Call of Duty franchise"

This is what the community has been saying about Call of Duty's games recently, and I couldn't agree more. What I didn't know was how extreme the SBMM wwould actually be in Call of Duty Vanguard compared to Black Ops Cold War. And in BOCW the SBMM was strict. I load up the game at launch and the first two matches I had were really good. I was running and gunning, shredding everyone who was in my line of sight and earning all my streaks. The third match loads up and I start to play. Instantly I have people drop shotting and slide shotting me. The experience turned from owning noobs to being in MLG $1 million dollar tournament.

The more matches I continued to play in the Call of Duty: Vanguard, the stricter the SBMM got. I was facing people of the same skill as me and the tier above. It wasn't any fun. SBMM should not be in public matches, only in ranked matches. I loved the old Call of Duty games like Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops 2 because SBMM wasn't a thing. In all the matches you played, people in those matches were random and not based on skill level. With the recent Call of Duty games however, you cannot relax because of the stupid SBMM. It literally ruins the game and no matter how much the community complains about it, the developers and publishers don't remove it.

Rant over.

I like being incognito

I've noticed a lot of people in this world like to share anything and everything with other people. And I could never understand why. People will post every photo that is on their phone to Instagram or they'll update their Facebook status for the 50th time in one day. I've started noticing a trend where people think they will succeed in being internet famous (or "influencers.").

I on the other hand, like to remain incognito. I don't like to tell everyone about what I am doing or how I am feeling. And when it comes to any sort of fame, that is certainly not for me.

Being in the background is where I feel most comfortable. I don't like being asked a billion different questions about what I am doing in life, or am I in a relationship yet, or have I done this or that...
It's no ones business but mine. And that's how I like it to be.

Imagine you are at a party. You see everyone dancing and talking to each other and then you look to the back of the room to see a guy leaning up against the wall with a can of beer in his hand, wishing he could just escape. That's me.

Is it some sort of social anxiety disorder? No.

Is it weird? Probably so.

But that's just me.

Can anyone else relate?

Meditation

One thing I still can't seem to successfully deal with is stress and anxiety. When ever something new happens in my life, I tend to let it build up to uncontrollable levels. Admittedly, I am the one to always bottle things up and hope to deal with them later on. This is definitely not a good way to manage anything as it will result in things only getting worse. I was browsing the internet recently and discovered an article on "stress, anxiety and meditation" and I was very intrigued by the benefits of what meditation can provide. It seemed like the solution I was always trying to find.

After reading that article, I decided I'd give myself a bit of a challenge and try to meditate at least once a week without fail. It's definitely not been easy to do. When you meditate, you have to try and clear your mind and only focus on the moment, so it is something you can't just master straight away. It takes time and a lot of patience. As each week goes by, I am slightly getting better at meditation and I can already start to feel the benefits it provides. A lot of the stress I was bottling up, is slowly going away. I am going to continue to try and meditate at least once every week and with time, hopefully increase it to twice a week if I get any spare time.
